Juan Santamaría International (SJO), about an hour and a half from Jaco.

For a Jaco trip the choice usually makes itself. Here’s how to decide in ten seconds:

Default choice

Fly into San José (SJO) if…

You want the shortest ground trip. It’s the best option for families with young kids, large groups, and anyone arriving on a late flight.

Sometimes

Consider Liberia (LIR) if…

You’re spending a few days in Guanacaste first, or your city has a much better nonstop fare to Liberia. Just budget for 3+ hours on the road.

Rarely

Quepos (XQP)…

Almost never makes sense for Jaco. You’d need a domestic flight from SJO or Liberia first, and then still drive about an hour.

Nonstop Flights from the US to San José (SJO)

SJO has the widest choice of nonstop flights from the United States. These are the routes operating as of September 2026:

Atlanta (ATL)DeltaSoutheast
Miami (MIA)American, AviancaSoutheast
Fort Lauderdale (FLL)JetBlue, SpiritSoutheast
Orlando (MCO)Frontier, Southwest, VolarisSoutheast

Nashville (BNA)SouthwestSoutheast
New York (JFK)JetBlueNortheast
Newark (EWR)UnitedNortheast
Houston (IAH / HOU)United, SouthwestTexas
Los Angeles (LAX)Alaska, Delta, UnitedWest
San Francisco (SFO)UnitedWest

Many routes are seasonal and schedules change often. Always confirm on the airline’s website before you book. No nonstop from your city? The easiest connections are through Miami, Houston, Atlanta and Charlotte.

Nonstop Flights from the US to Liberia (LIR)

Liberia is served nonstop from Los Angeles, Dallas–Fort Worth, Chicago O’Hare, Denver, Boston, Atlanta, Miami, Charlotte, Newark, New York LaGuardia and Baltimore–Washington, mainly on United, American, Delta, JetBlue and Southwest. Many of these flights only run in the winter high season, so check dates carefully.

A cheaper fare into Liberia can be worth it, but price in the extra 3–3.5 hours on the road before you compare. For a group with kids, that drive often costs more than the fare difference saves.

Flying in from different cities? Land together.

Family reunions and corporate groups often arrive on three or four different flights, and every arrival window means another transfer. Ask everyone to book into the same airport within a 2–3 hour window, and one vehicle can take the whole group. Our local team can coordinate arrivals across every flight, and our all-inclusive Jaco vacation packages bring the villa, tours and services into one plan.

There’s No Airport in Jaco: How to Get from SJO to Jaco

Jaco itself has no commercial airport; the old Hacienda Jacó grass airstrip never had scheduled flights. From SJO it’s about 85 km (53 miles) to Jaco, mostly on Route 27, a toll highway. You have five ways to cover it:

After a long flight, driving yourself on unfamiliar mountain roads isn’t most people’s idea of a vacation. And with a group, a rental car rarely fits everyone and their bags. That’s why most families and groups we host choose a private SJO to Jaco transfer.

Book a private SJO to Jaco transfer

Getting to Jaco from Liberia (LIR)

From Liberia it’s about 122 miles, or 3–3.5 hours, mostly on the Pan-American Highway before joining the coast road south. Our private transfer from Liberia Airport is $250 for up to 10 passengers and $350 for 11–18, roughly $19–25 per person.

It’s a good plan if you’re spending a few days in Guanacaste first. If Jaco is your only stop, compare the fare saving against roughly two extra hours on the road before you commit.

What About Quepos (XQP)?

Quepos La Managua is a small domestic airport next to Manuel Antonio. SANSA and Costa Rica Green Airways fly there from San José in about 30 minutes. For Jaco, though, you’d land at SJO, catch a domestic flight south, then drive about an hour back north, which rarely beats a direct 1.5-hour transfer from SJO.

Flying Liberia → Quepos to Skip the Drive?

It’s a fair question if you land in Liberia: a domestic flight to Quepos exists, so why not fly instead of driving 3+ hours? For Jaco, the numbers rarely work:

Domestic flights from Liberia to Quepos would cost about $750–$2,150 for five people. A private transfer from Liberia costs $250 for the whole family, and gets you to Jaco just as fast. The flight only makes sense if you’re staying in Manuel Antonio, or you’re a couple traveling light who would rather fly than ride.

Where You’ll Stay: Jaco, Los Sueños or Hermosa Beach

Transfers drop off at any address in Jaco, Los Sueños or Hermosa Beach, so your airport choice doesn’t limit where you stay. Each area suits a different kind of group:

Arrival-Day Tips for Families and Corporate Groups

  • Allow time for immigration and customs at SJO before your transfer pickup, especially when several international flights land together.
  • Send us your bag count, not just your headcount. Luggage decides the vehicle size as much as passengers do, golf bags and strollers included.
  • Traveling with young children? Tell us their ages when you book so we can plan the ride around them.
  • Corporate groups: nominate one point of contact and share a single arrival list with every flight number. It keeps pickups on time when flights move.
  • Share flight numbers, not just times. Your driver can then follow delays and early arrivals.

You Book the Flights. We’ll Handle Everything Else.
